To register to vote in the March 1st Primary Election, an application must be mailed or submitted by Monday, February 1, 2016. Register in person at the Hays County Voter Registrar Office, 712 S. The Wimberley Community Chorus rehearses each Monday evening from 7-9 pm at the Wimberley Presbyterian Church located at 956 FM 2325. Anyone is welcome to join rehearsals for their spring concerts to be held April 1, 2, and 3. February 2 – Tuesday The EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens is looking for volunteers to help prepare their gardens for spring. Work days are planned for three Tuesdays in February: February 2, 16, and 23, at 9 am each day. To volunteer, contact Rebecca Stoian by email at rebecca@emilyann.org. Jesse Huth, of Huth Avian Services, leads a bird walk the first Tuesday of each month for a modest fee. The group meets at 7:15 am in the parking lot of the Wimberley Community Center (14068 Ranch Road 12) and then will travel to a location no more than an hour away. An All Abilities Chair Exercises program will be offered at the Wimberley Village Library, 9:30 – 10:30 am each Tuesday and Thursday, starting January 5, 2016. Breathing and moving with more intelligence and awareness supports and enhances a healthier lifestyle. Your breathing and moving patterns affect every cell of your body. In this class that is both lecture and experiential, we will investigate (1) the anatomy and physiology of breathing and (2) very gentle stretches to open your body. Lauren Robins, Registered Massage Therapist, MS, with 25 years of yoga and dance/movement experience, offers this breath and movement awareness class. This 8 week program provides tools to complete losses from death, relationship breakups, health or any of the more than 43 losses that can occur. Grief is a normal and natural reaction to loss. This group offers seniors suffering from moderate memory loss a chance for social engagement in a safe, supportive environment, while providing a break for their primary caregiver from the demands of providing round-the-clock care for their loved one. It’s easy to lose ourselves in a barrage of rapidly flowing thought streams that flood our consciousness, creating a meandering of current distractions. Mindfulness has been described as awareness, attention and remembering - remembering to remember to pay attention. Mindfulness is about compassion, interconnectedness and having an open heart. Based on the book Living Mindfully-52 quotes and weekly Mindfulness Practices, edited by Richard Fields, Ph.D. Weekly attendance is not required, but encouraged. The Sanctuary in the Village is located at 501 Old Kyle Road in Wimberley. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office Advanced Citizen Academy application deadline is Friday, February 5, 2016. All student applications must be completed and returned to the Sheriff’s Office in order to be considered. There are only 24 openings in each academy class, therefore, not every application will be accepted. An eligibility list will be established for last minute cancellations and openings in future academy classes. The Academies starting date is February 19, 2015 and graduation date is April 09, 2015 times 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The Debate is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Hays County to increase voter education and participation. Hays County Democratic and Republican candidates in the upcoming Primary Election have been invited to participate. They include candidates for Sheriff, County Commissioner Pct. 3, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Place 1 & 2, Constable Pct. 2 and Pct. 5, and Republican Party Chair. The Debate will be video recorded and provided to all local news media. It will be available for viewing online a few days following the debate. League President Peggy Townes reminds the public that the League’s non-partisan stance is a vital principle of the League and will be evident in both the Debate and the Voters Guide. All candidates for each office will be asked the same carefully crafted questions, with each having an equal opportunity to be the first to respond to a question. For fairness, time limits will be strictly enforced. Debate Moderator will be Kaylene Ray, an experienced League moderator. The program will feature a conversation between leading groundwater scientists about the long-term health of the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, and its ability to sustainably serve the needs of a thirsty region.
